Shanghai Port completes first ship-to-ship green methanol bunkering

The port delivered 1,000 tonnes of green methanol to COSCO SHIPPING YANGPU, marking the full integration of a domestically developed clean fuel supply chain

Shanghai Port has completed its first ship-to-ship bunkering of green methanol fuel, a landmark achievement that signals the full integration of a domestically developed green methanol supply chain.

The bunkering operation involved the COSCO SHIPPING YANGPU, China’s first domestically built methanol dual-fuel containership, which received 1,000 tonnes of green methanol fuel via ship-to-ship transfer.

Green methanol supply chain

Shengang International Petroleum Storage and Transportation Company, based at Yangshan Island, coordinated the operation.

Their team managed inventory and ensured the safe and timely transfer of green methanol, completing a process that began with domestic production and ended with successful at-sea delivery.

This marks the realisation of a closed-loop supply chain encompassing methanol production, storage, transportation, and bunkering entirely within China.

It also reflects the maturing infrastructure that allows Shanghai Port to provide regular green methanol fuelling services.

Since Shanghai completed its first batch of bunkering of green methanol in March 2025, stakeholders across the port ecosystem have worked together to normalise operations.

Green shipping future

Yangshan Port’s dedicated methanol storage tank facility provides the scale needed to support the growing demand for green fuel.

Its capacity and efficiency make it a strategic asset in helping international shipping companies meet sustainability goals.

Government support has also played a vital role. Border inspection and regulatory agencies have collaborated closely with energy firms to streamline formalities and enhance overall operational efficiency.

The breakthrough comes at a time when Shanghai continues to climb the ranks of top international shipping centres. According to the latest Xinhua-Baltic International Shipping Centre Development Index, Shanghai maintained its third-place global ranking for the sixth consecutive year.
